Laundry Experiment: Powdered Homemade Detergent

I have been very pleased with the results of my home-made laundry detergent and would encourage you to give it a try if you are interested. It was easy to make and does just as well as my regular laundry detergents (most recently: Surf) at cleaning the clothes. The washing soda and borax I found at the grocery store in the laundry section (about $3 each and they will make a few batches of detergent). The clothes come out smelling nice and fresh.

POWDERED DETERGENT:

2 c. finely grated bar soap (I used Dial)
1 c. washing soda (a.k.a. sodium carbonate - also used in pools)
1 c. borax

mix well and store in an airtight container

use 2 T per full load

FYI - I used this detergent to clean my CLOTH DIAPERS and they came out just as clean! (still did the extra rinse with 1/4 c. vinegar)

I have been wondering where to get borax and washing soda...where did you find it? I haven't searched too hard but I need some for laundry detergent as well. Have you tried a liquid soap recipe? My sister-in-law loves her homemade liquid soap.
